Statement to the recent ICAN study "Don’t Bank on the Bomb"

KfW strongly denies the allegation that it is involved in the financing of nuclear weapons. Any financing of this kind would not only contradict its legal mandate, but would also contravene its corporate policies and principles. An allegation of this nature was made in the study “Don’t Bank on the Bomb” published by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on 7 March 2018. The allegation is based on the grounds that KfW is generally involved in working relationships with companies that the organisation believes to be linked to the production of nuclear weapons, including companies involved in aerospace engineering.

Under its legal mandate, KfW finances projects and exports by German and European companies. This group has also always included companies in the aerospace industry, e.g. producers of aircraft or aircraft components such as engines. However, the financing issued is in no way related to nuclear weapons
