German Federal Government commissions KfW to invest in TransnetBW

The German Federal Government has acquired a minority stake of 24.95% in TransnetBW GmbH, one of the four electricity transmission network operators in Germany, via KfW. As a result, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG has successfully completed the sales process of its network subsidiary.

The south-west consortium was launched at the end of May under the leadership of SparkassenVersicherung. The Federal Government has now also commissioned KfW to invest in a stake in TransnetBW. KfW had an acquisition option for this second minority share, which it has now exercised at the identical market conditions determined by EnBW in the sales process.

The process for the partial sale of TransnetBW was announced by EnBW in February 2022. The signing of the transaction with KfW now completes this process.

The investment is also helping the German Federal Government to achieve the climate targets set for 2030. According to several studies, the implementation of the energy transition requires an investment of up to EUR 600 billion. One important part of the energy transition investment is the expansion of transmission networks, into which considerable sums are already flowing.
