Sustainable development and growth: a key role to be played by national promotional institutions in Europe

Milan, 4 December 2023 – The theme of the “Eyes on a sustainable future” event, jointly hosted by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Borsa Italiana, was the relationship between sustainability and economic growth against the backdrop of COP28.

Participants included representatives of the Italian Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), the French Caisse des Dépôts (CDC), the Spanish Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO), the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The promotional institutions aim to continue to work together on tackling the challenges of European sustainability reporting in the future, too, and thus promote sustainable investments more strongly.

KfW was represented by Dr Lutz-Christian Funke, Executive Secretary of KfW, who is well aware of the role played by national promotional banks in sustainable change:

"As a promotional and development bank, KfW supports this transformation in Germany and internationally. In 2022 alone, we provided around EUR 60 billion in financing for climate and environmental action worldwide. Our compass is the UN’s climate goals and the Paris Agreement. Our cooperation and the exchange of experiences with our European partners play an important role in this, because these challenges do not stop at national borders – they can only be overcome together."

Sustainability is not only essential for maintaining a healthy environment, but is a decisive factor in economic and social growth. Young people today are well aware of ESG issues. This is the main outcome of a survey among citizens in five European countries (Italy, France, Germany, Spain and Poland). The findings of the survey were shared at the event.
