Assess the impact made – learn for the future
The effects of the promotional funds used are a focal point of the work performed by KfW Development Bank on behalf of the Federal Government.
Education
The projects receiving promotional funds in the amount of EUR 404.7 million (EUR 270.7 million in budget funds, EUR 134 million in promotional loans) will reach around 2.7 million people, 1.6 million of whom are living below the poverty line. Women will benefit from around half of the commitments (48%).
Financial sector
New commitments of approximately EUR 700 million to banks, funds and microfinance institutions have enabled some 1.2 million loans with a total volume of EUR 4.2 billion to be granted primarily to small enterprises.
Peace and security
A total of EUR 575 million was committed to 30 projects relating to refugees in 2016. These funds will reach around 9 million refugees and people living in the communities taking them in. The overall refugee portfolio comprises 95 ongoing projects in 27 countries with a total volume of EUR 2.0 billion.
Employment
The loans and grants provided in 2016 represent a contribution to the creation and safeguarding of nearly 1.4 million permanent jobs.
Projects are not shelved and forgotten even after the actual implementation phase has ended. Our independent evaluation department makes sure of this. It evaluates around half of the projects financed by KfW several years after their completion on a random sample basis, and looks at whether the original objectives were achieved for the long term. This systematic evaluation helps to ensure the quality of the work performed by KfW Development Bank on behalf of the Federal Government and allows KfW to apply the lessons learned to new projects. We want to know what works, how it works and why it works so that we can ensure our promotional funds have as long-term an impact as possible for people living in our partner countries. We publish the results of all evaluations. The success rate is high: our evaluation department rates around 80% of projects financed by KfW Development Bank as successful.
