KfW Development Bank in 2024
We promote development
KfW promotes projects in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and South-East Europe on behalf of the German Federal Government. The bank supports developing countries and emerging economies in alleviating poverty, securing peace, protecting the environment, mitigating climate change and ensuring fair globalisation.
Our transformation projects
KfW Development Bank’s projects contribute to achieving the 17 global sustainable development goals (SDGs). The SDGs (e.g. “Zero Hunger”, “Affordable and Clean Energy”, “Sustainable Cities and Communities”) were adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly at the UN Sustainability Summit in September 2015 and highlight the need to advance the global transformation into an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable society.
Examples:
- Côte d'Ivoire's first-ever solar power plant was inaugurated in the north of the country. A total of 35,000 households are now being supplied with clean electricity, with 150,000 people benefiting and 35,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions being saved per year. More about the project
- The aim of the EU “Global Gateway” project is to integrate European infrastructure with that of its neighbouring regions to enable significant CO2 savings. As part of this, KfW is financing a 200-kilometre-long sub-sea cable that will join up the electricity grids in Tunisia and Italy for the first time. More about the project
- KfW is supporting important structural reforms in Indonesia’s waste sector to build a circular economy. The project's ultimate aim is that Indonesia will be able to reduce the amount of plastic waste entering its oceans by 70% by 2025. The country intends to involve the private sector in the financing of the system moving forwards. More about the project
- For more than three years, Ukraine has been resolutely defending itself against the Russian invasion. KfW is providing support in a variety of ways to ensure that life continues, the economy keeps on running, and people are supplied with electricity and water. Find out more
- Half of the world’s population is female, yet many women are still suffering under heteronomy and have poor access to medical care and modern family planning methods. This is also the case for women in Pakistan. Find out more on KfW’s support for physical self-determination
- Investment funds with a social focus have proven to be effective instruments for development cooperation. One success story is a pilot fund for global health, the Global Health Investment Fund (GHOF). Find out more
